The SD Foodie take

Editorial commentary written from Roger’s original photograph and caption. Roger’s own words are the quoted photo note above.

Two bowls on a metal patio table: the house Underbelly Ramen with thick slabs of pork, a soft egg, nori and sesame, and the darker Belly of the Beast behind it, with a beer and condiments at the edge of the frame. A plate of shucked oysters was posted from the same visit earlier that evening.

This is where a long habit starts. Roger posted another Underbelly bowl eleven days later, called Belly of the Beast a bowl that hits the spot each time in January 2013, and was still ordering there in 2014. Few places in the archive have a paper trail that long.

The quick critique

What stood out

  • Thick-cut pork and a soft egg
  • Two house bowls side by side
  • The start of a years-long Underbelly habit

Bottom line

Archive verdict

The first chapter of Roger’s most documented ramen habit — two bowls he kept coming back for.
