Looking back

The SD Foodie take

Editorial commentary written from Roger’s original photograph and caption. Roger’s own words are the quoted photo note above.

The bowl is loaded: big white fish balls, slices of fish cake and pieces of crisp-skinned roast duck over thin egg noodles in clear broth with scallions. Roger noted the duck was an extra.

Minutes later he posted a pair of green tea egg tarts with flaky crusts, and later that day a full dim sum spread in Chinatown. Four days earlier he had eaten xiaolongbao there too. On a New York trip full of famous addresses, Chinatown is where he kept going back.

The quick critique

What stood out

  • Fish balls with extra roast duck
  • Green tea egg tarts
  • A full Chinatown dim sum session the same day

Bottom line

Archive verdict

Comfort food in Manhattan’s Chinatown — the part of the New York trip that felt most like home cooking.
