Japanese
Roger called this Hillcrest sushi spot a good option for cheap sushi, though you get what you pay for; his usual sashimi mixture bowl was acceptable if not the freshest, and the rolls tended to fall apart easily.

From Roger’s Foursquare
Been coming here on and off the last 6-7 years or so and their raw fish has never been fresh! Cheap prices though, definitely not a place for sushi snobs

“Sushi Deli is a place to go for some sushi with good prices. But at the same time, you get what you pay for”
Roger has returned to this Hillcrest sushi spot a couple of times, each with about a 20-minute wait; his usual sashimi mixture bowl was acceptable though not the freshest, and the rolls tended to fall apart, but he called it a solid budget option and appreciated a server who quietly comped a tea refill despite the posted policy.
Stay in the neighborhood

Roger's Hillcrest cigar-bar pick, run by an owner (Raul) he calls the friendliest in town, open later than most local lounges with a strong Belgian beer selection on tap and bottle.

A Hillcrest Chinese restaurant Roger says declined after the pandemic, dropping from a two-star review to one star, after an earlier visit he'd already called just okay and Americanized.

A Hillcrest location of the Nishiki Ramen chain -- a separate address from the site's existing Kearny Mesa entry -- rated a middling three stars by Roger.
